For Tommy

A couple of weeks ago I found an old friend on Facebook from my school days in Brazil.

Tommy was the pure concept of sunshine. Huge blue eyes and a broad smile that seemed to never leave his face. Tommy’s father was our math teacher and the one who went with us to the first Hard Rock festival in Rio – we were a small group of hard core hard rock fans, and we were minors in need of an adult “victim” to accompany us. At the end it was due to Tommy’s father that we were the only ones who had to watch the show from behind (!) the stage, as he expected the Maracanã stadium to collapse under the rhythmic jumps of the audience.

Tommy was also the magic guitar player of our first very own band … And only his huge smile never quite fit the hard rock concept.

Tommy just died of liver failure.

Like many of us. he did not cope well with returning to live in Germany.

I found out literally one click before I read that I was being asked to submit a quick selfportrait.

I thought, I could not do a self portrait today.
I did one nonetheless.
I am not sure if it can be used for what it is supposed to be for …
But here we go.
For Tommy.
For blue eyes and a soul that will now hopefully find it’s light again.

In The Light of Crisis

This was the first image I submitted to David Alan Harvey for BURNmagazine. He published it in the “single images” section.
It shows a church on a hilltop in Bornheim, where I lived. The wintery night skies and snowy grounds glowing in the lights of Frankfurt’s bank district, that is situated behind the hill. The offices all lit up, people desperately working until late at night. It was the time of the economical crisis in the banking sector. And the crisis reflected all over the place. Quite literally, as one can see.

Disencounters is up on BURNmagazine

David Alan Harvey sent me a note today, that “Disencounters” was up on BURNmagazine. What a nice surprise!

We had talked about Disencounters since November 2010, when I was not yet sure about how long I would still be shooting for it. It turned out that I was almost done. Thankfully.

I then opened up about the series, told Tony about it and asked if he would mind not only to shoot the final diptych for me but also to have the images published. Thankfully he is a good sport with a wonderful and strong personality and very supportive of my work.

So while on 81 diptychs you see Tony’s side of the bed – with or without him – I asked him to turn the tables and shoot me in a similar way for the final image on the final day. So there I am, sleeping the day away …

The images for the series were shot on consecutive days. There are only two nights missing, and that was when I went to ParisPhoto by myself. I even shot while Tony was in England for his construction site, leaving me an empty bed behind.

In these 82 nights we had a lot of unplanned scenarios: we had a sick dog, who had us sleep on the sofa with him, I had a sick boyfriend, who went to bed with a plastic bowl and towel – just in case –, and we had travelling times, when I simply took the camera with me.

David Alan Harvey thought that an edit of 20 pictures would do to get the point across on BURN and I gave him all the 82 picturs to make a selection. The only image I thought important to have in, was the last one in that very last position, which Tony did of me. Otherwise I was very curious which 19 he would select to go before that. On one hand side it is easy, because we have just variations of the same thing in the pictures, but on the other side, if you want to choose a selection without regard to the order, then there are several possible roads to travel.

To see David Alan Harvey’s selection for BURNmagazine, please visit BURNmagazine.
To see the whole set of 82 images, you can go to the Project “Disencounters” on this site.

Feedback (by email) is always welcome.
Thank you so much for your time!

BURN01 arrived

BURN01 arrived. And it did so very fast – only three days since ordering, which beats almost all my amazon orders – and in perfect condition. Thanks to Diego Orlando, who did a great job with the organisation of it all and even reimbursed me part of the shipping costs!

I am happy to say, that BURN01 is BEAUTIFUL! Just amazing! David Alan Harvey did a grand job of editing down the incredible amount of essays he got for burnmagazine.org towards something rich, vibrant and divers. Even though I know most of the material from burnmagazine.org , the printed version made me rediscover it in a completely new and different way. Anton Kusters’ elegant layout provids a good framework for the images.

Featured in BURNmagazine

I got a totally nice Skype message from David Alan Harvey the other day, telling me that one of my images from the workshop with Antonin Kratochvil in Transylvania was up on BURNmagazine. I had totally forgotten about that submission and my first thought was that there was some mistake or mix-up. But there was none and I am very happy to see this image up on BURN.

The Transylvania workshop was an amazing experience for me. Very intense. It gave me a lot to chew. I wanted to force some decisions and for that I needed additional oppinions. The workshop in Transylvania was just one of these lucky things that happen at the right time. Not only did Transylvania sound perfect, Antonin Kratochvil did sound perfect too. Back at that time I was reworking the concept for A Stranger’s Wish and thus very interested in portraiture. I have to admit – hopefully without sounding arrogant – that most portraiture I see around strikes me as utterly boring. Along my researches I stumbled across Antonin’s old portraiture photographs and they left me with a deep longing and curiosity, which made me constantly want to go back to them to try to grasp “it”. It was like I was feeding on them. And this kind of excitement is one of the things I expect from photography/art. On top of that Antonin was said to be ruthless, mean, direct, sincere, not sparing, only caring about photography and not about someone’s feelings – exactly what I was looking for!

I do not mean to say that I am a masochist. But I wanted some slaps of truth in my face. I had not found photography as a toddler neither did I grew up with it in any way. I was a trained architect and working on filmprojects for several years before it struck me. LATE! If I wanted to do something with photography, I needed to see where I was standing and I needed to just suck in whatever information possible to see if this path made sense at all for me …

David Alan Harvey was already helping me enormously by throwing the right questions into the arena, but you need more than one star to be able to define your position when you navigate. And I was looking for another star. A dark star. I found it.

Some more text will follow …

It came and 10 days later it left us again: On New Year’s Eve burnians.com was taken down, leaving a solitary homepage to keep the memory alive.

At least for the time being. Never say never, though.

burned out

las0435

No … not really “burned out”, I just could not resist the title :)

Actually it is quite the opposite feeling: burnin ON, or burning IN or whatever you would want to call it.

But at nights, which due to my strange sleeping habits are mostly “early mornings”, I feel like I had an elephant sitting on my head throughout the day. A hot bath is just the quickest way to reset me that I know of.

I just wish I would not belong to the crowd that needs 8+ hours of sleep. What a waste!

And no, the bathtub is old, yes, but it is not filthy … no light and a “dirty picture” does that to a bathtub. Don’t you sometimes not just LOVE a “dirty picture”?! Yes, yes …

Nevermind the clouds … clouds are there to make things more interesting – in pictures as well as in real life.

The last couple of weeks have been phenomenal: I have talked to so so many colleagues, bundling energies and thoughts, brainstorming, motivating and receiving motivations, organizing, planning, working … working … WORKING!

Yes, “we” usually work alone … but then there are certain people, who just boost the speed when you find each other and sit together to get things done. It is like magic! And all of this, thanks to the internet, regardless of where you are.

MAGIC indeed!
Thanks Haik!!
