Graffito

Found this graffito down at the river. Different. Huge, too.

Somebody left it there on the night before the opening of the frankfurt bookfair – right where the hotel ships dock.
I would like to think that it is a statement.

Papaya dream

Just found an excellent supplier of papaya here in Frankfurt. Yummi!!!!
I could eat them non stop …

New Friends

This time, I bought them.

As some of you might know, I draw a lot. A while ago I lost interest in improving my skills. I was bored. The whole thing started to feel like it was getting in my way and this feeling was one of the reasons why I took up photography. I wanted a different approach. So it goes.

Now things are feeding each other and … well … it is not only quite exciting, I also am ready to go on with drawing to be able to include this into some new projects. My new friends will help me.

Will be nice not to have to twist myself half naked in front of a mirror during winter time anymore. This old appartment is not so well isolated and can get quite freezing.

Happy Easter!

This is an old image, from my pre-photography time so to speak, made with my very first point & shoot, a Nikon Coolpix with revolving monitor and a whoping 1200×1600 pixels. I remember stumbling upon this lonely chocolate bunny in an otherwise empty window of an internetcafe while walking to my T’ai Chi classes one night in January (!). It was freezing cold with a harsh wind and my icy hands had a hard time using the camera, which back then still had a metal body (!!!!). They do not make Coolpix like that anymore … Oh well. I took about 12 pictures to get one more or less decent one as it only had an autofocus which did not work too well under the circumstances of bad light and a smudgy window … The one above was the best one I could get.

I had that camera for many years until it fell asleep at a certain point – reacting slower and slower before stopping altogether. I still have it in my cupboard. I grow terribly attached to these objects.

Interesting though … I have always, even back then, taken the same kind of images. I remember all my friends and family constantly complaining: they said they would like the pictures, if they were not that dark and depressing.

I never thought of my images as being depressing.

If I passed this bunny today, I would not react differently than in 2005.

Meanwhile, at CERN …

I interrupt the normal agenda of this blog for the announcement that the Large Hadron Collider physics programme will begin with collisions in the LHC at 7 TeV (= energy level) today (30 March 2010).
Several webcasts are available from CERN, including life footage from the control rooms of the different LHC experiments: Atlas, Alice, CMS and LHCb.

There is a schedule page here.
Background videos, interviews etcetcetc here.
There is more information, like the animated LHC Status Display … just look around.

This is just soooo exciting!!!!
After 20 years of preparation … it is supposed to start in 30min. It will take some time to prepare for the injection and … in 1 hour and a half the first collisions at 7eV are supposed to occure.

Oh yeah, they will provide pictures.

A Frankfurt Winter Night with Hunter

I always enjoy the last walk of the day with Hunter. Very often Tony comes with us or, the other way around, I go with them. It is a time to recapitulate the day, a time to brainstorm or just to joke around a bit.

Since it snowed Hunter is the happiest dog while chasing mice “down under”, towing huge frozen sticks back home or simply rolling in the snow until he looks like a little yeti. He is making our late night walks become longer and longer …

The light – which is the reflection from a construction site light onto snow – is quite amazing.

The Staircase Mystery

Under normal circumstances, I do throw packaging material away before it starts piling up on my desk or next to it.

There are two reasons why I still have the envelope from Little Brown Mushroom Books laying around. First of all because of the red drawing on the sender label that just made my heart smile – I am an architect after all. And secondly because … I still have not figured out what is sitting next to that guy under the staircase. And that is really bugging me.

I think I need your help with this, so I can finally empty my desk.
I will draw the coolest answers and post them here.
So be bold and creative and PLEASE explain me what that stuff could be … :)

Digital Pinholes

pinholes3

Looking closely at the digital images for Pink Lobo, these little “friends” of mine are all over the place. It is like chasing mice! Have not had this on my Nikon yet, but my Canon seems to be more animal friendly here …

By now I know where they are but it is making me need so much more time to prepare the dummy book for Pink Lobo!

After my breakthrough a couple of days ago it actually was so easy to finish the edit, that I wanted to send the files to the printservices this weekend. The only thing that left me a little sad was that some of the images I personally liked the best, did not find their way into the final selection. But that is just how it is with edits: things have to fit together.

Pairs of legs and a ball

lassal_0023

Every time I get into the kitchen to make me some tea … there he is – waiting more or less patiently for me to kick that round thing around.

Must be a man’s thing.

I sometimes wish all these other legs would play with him, after all there are plenty of them around. Then at least I would not feel like drinking tea all the time to keep that little guy happy.

Merry Christmas

lassal-0031
I wish everybody a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year 2010.

As far as I have heard, it is all about a balanced dance of focus and serendipity. So let’s get these dancing shoes out of the cabinet and on our feet and lets do some pirouettes together!

Hold on – here we gooooooooo … !!!
