The above is the slideshow that I put together for the AMAZING(!) first ever LOOKbetween, that I was extremely honored to be invited to.

I find it rather difficult to present this series as a slideshow or video: there is no time to read the texts or translations, the weight of the individual elements has to be changed because of the layout, and the linear movement totally bothers me. Sometimes, obviously, there is just no way around it. And it actually was fun to add the sound of some number-stations, which I found very appropriate to give an alternative (and moderns still!) view towards the topic “Home/Heimat”.

Funny enough I had done some of the sound recordings of number-stations way back in Brazil, when I was still at school and experimenting with my little tape recorder and the world service. By looking for the “Deutsche Welle” on times for news at night, you would always tap into one of these “spy channels”. Only that back then I had no idea what it was all about. To me it sounded like some people constantly testing equipment.

I refrain to put the remixed soundfile up here, because while most governments still deny their envolvement, it is, in some countries, forbidden BY LAW to listen to these channels. How is that for a logic? :)

If you are interested, you can find more about the subject of number-stations on Wikipedia or on The Conet Project, where you can also listen to some recordings.

The Home-Project does have a very own website, “A Stranger’s Wish”, which will be available again soon.
