LOOKbetween – being there

“LOOK3 is hosting an experimental two night event to present the work of 90 innovative photographers on a farm 30 minutes west of Charlottesville. This initiative, which we are calling LOOKbetween, is designed to showcase early-career talent and engage the presenting artists with media professionals on practices and trends influencing the direction of photography today. We want to turn the traditional mentorship model on its head and let the next generation of photographers, editors, publishers, curators, and media professionals share their vision for the future.”

At this point I want to thank the amazing organization team from LOOK3 for their seemingly supernatural efforts. It was PERFECT! Just as if practiced for many years – but hey, no: the event at the Deep Rock Farm was a first timer for everybody! Unbelievable.

LOOKbetween was a magical experience. And I am still a bit at loss for words – and images. So if you want to see more about the event, I encourage you to visit the LOOKbetween tumblr page and to take in the impressions.

I think I can talk for most of us that we were a little overwhelmed and that we would have loved 1-2 additional days to really fully unfold the potential of this awesome get together. And I think the connection aspect is one of the central ones of LOOKbetween.

I am immensely greatful to have been chosen to be in the first group to attend LOOKbetween. If anybody ever gets the chance, please do yourself a favor and attend! Regardless of if as an invited artist or as a visitor.

Below just a vage impression of mother nature watching our show … Huge insects in the projector’s beam of light, like erratic shooting stars, of which there also where many. Enough to make our dreams come true? We will see … and certainly do our share for it to happen.

Slideluck Potshow Nairobi

lassal1613swpf

I am happy to hear that my submission was chosen to be included into Slideluck Potshow Nairobi, which will start tonight, January 16, 2010.

It was a very spontaneous idea from my part to submit some work and it definitively had to do with the fact that I still have so many nice images from Kenya on my harddrives, images that I did not include into that one exhibition in the European Parliament in 2007. So I felt this was a chance to show some more work and I am glad it worked out.

Special thanks to Tony Hunt for diving into the adventure of producing a sound for me. I know it is not easy to work for someone who knows too well what s/he wants but cannot do it her-/himself – especially if you just have one day for it. I loved the outcome though – fantastic job! :)

And many thanks to the never tired Slideluck Team! Congrats to all of the participants – I wish everybody a fantastic party tonight!

Wish I could be there.

The image above is not in the selection of work that I submitted but I had it already on the server and it belongs to the same body of work: a documentation of a cross coutry drive from Mosocho in the West of the Kenya to Nairobi. I did a lot of images during that extremely long car drive, and I do have various edits, some comprising people, some landscapes, some only showing painted fassades – some in color, some in b&w …

I am switching computers right now and backups onto external harddrives are currently running. I have about 12 of those lined up here and on the 4th from the right are the Kenya images that I submitted. If I do not forget, I might put up a little slideshow next week or so.

Slideluck Potshow Austin II

I just got an email with the text below … and I am thrilled!
Here is a link to the KURSK project, from which I chose some images for the submission. I asked a good friend of mine, Stephan Boden, to do the soundfile for KURSK and I think he did a tremendous job, even though my ideas for it were quite demanding.

Impressions

Impressions from the Exhibition at Galerie Slutzky

After two prolongations, the exhibition has now come to an end.
I would like to share some impressions with all of you. It was not very easy to make pictures of it, but I think I found a good solution to give you the look&feel.

Kursk Video online

kursk video screenshot

The image above is a screenshot taken from the video shown at my current exhibition in Frankfurt. It includes some of the images from my original Kursk-Project. You can see it online here.

These images are NOT edited. The look&feel is the result of a broken tv-set combined with file-type changes for the video-format. It was a conscious decision not to correct the colours but to leave them as given.

Postcards for Kenya

postcard editions

I spent some of my last few days preparing a postcard edition of 250 sets, simply named “Kenya 2006″.
Each set of postcards comes in a very simple, handmade cardboardbox with an equally handmade titleprint on top and on the sides. I think it complements the 12 black and white postcards very well.

The 12 pictures were made in Kenya in December 2006 and were a part of the exhibition at the European Parliament in November 2007. Each box is numbered and signed. They will be on sale at Galerie Slutzky here in Frankfurt and on this website.

For orders please contact me directly. You will find more information as to the content and the costs here.

Out of sheer curiosity I submitted a low res of the image below to the National Geographic “Photo of the Day” contest and it became an Editors’ Pick, which was a nice recognition. You can read more about this picture here.

Exhibition in the EU-Parliament in Brussels /2

lassal brussels 01

It came and it went and it was a very special time with a lot of people I had not seen for a year or so. Memorable also for finding out that no matter who you meet and where, somehow you will always have common friends. The world is small, indeed.

The exhibition is now apparently going on to Spain, France and Italy. But I do not know anything specific up to this moment.

And… yes: I did in fact choose these two pictures in this article on purpose!
